2007 VJ Project
In November 2007 a 6 week course in VJing started at The Cangle.
VJing is like DJing but stands for Visual or Video Jockeying.
Visuals are mixed in time with the music playing and are usually projected onto a screen at the back of the performance area.
The visuals are made up of still images – graphics, photos, scanned artworks, etc – or short film loops.
Our first session covered an introduction to VJing where we watched DVDs of Underworld, some clips from YouTube and a documentary from a previous Cangle VJ project where a VJ Crew was formed to VJ live at the Haverhill Rock Competition.
The second and third week were spent on creating new visual images. A lot of fun was had using Slinkys, bike lights, xrays, drums, booming speakers, upside-down eyes, plastic cherries & peanuts and even a drumming monkey!
We covered things like how rhythm works and beat matching, music production and engineering.
We had two sessions where we set up the VJ software – Arkaos – to work with our clips and to trigger them in time to the music and add effects and text as we went along!
There was a showcase where we performed in public – to an audience of over 300 people! - at the Mix n Blend event in Bury St Edmunds on Feb 15 2008.
